Geofictions was a collaborative project initiated with media artist Yaloo.
From May to July 2024, we participated in an artist residency at Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where we explored histories of terraforming using the port of Kaohsiung as our departure point. Drawing on a range of material evidence - from archival data, to contemporary natural specimens, and even speculative art - we sought to question how infrastructural development (of the port and beyond) might have impacted local marine ecologies over time. Crucially, the project involved partnering with a number of collaborators, including: students and staff at Hanmin Elementary School; Yuan-Pin Chang, Tzu-Hsuan Tu, Yi-chun Weng, Jingying Wu, and Yihuai Huang (National Sun Yat-sen University); Li-Chin Chou (National Academy of Marine Research); and Mu Tsan. The residency culminated in an exhibition, the identity of which was designed by Handi Kim. Read more about the project research process via the Centre for Design History blog.
In 2021, we published Geofictions: Work in Progress (ISBN: 979-11-970985-9-8), an experimental book containing “pre-research” for our residency. Physical copies of the publication are held by: Asia Art Archive, The British Library, and the libraries of University of Brighton, Royal College of Art, and Goldsmiths, University of London. Geofictions: Work in Progress was designed by Minyoung Yang, and funded by a grant from the Incheon Foundation for Arts & Culture.
